Safety First! Are you protected by a RCD when using electric garden tools?

A RCD (residual-current device) is a circuit breaker which cuts the mains electricity when it detects an imbalance in the current, such as when a cable has been accidentally cut.

Given many garden tools such as lawnmowers and hedge trimmers have moving cutting blades it is essential when using them to protect yourself from a potentially fatal accidental electric shock by ensuring you are connected to the mains electricity via an RCD.

If the socket your tool is plugged into is not protected by a RCD adapters such as the one below are widely available. These plug into the mains socket and then your equipment plugs into the built in socket.

RCD adapters are widely available and not expensive considering the safety role they play. Buyspares, Screwfix and Amazon all sell them by mail order.
